Tango evening at the Stadttheater

District cantor Christian Kurtzahn and his choir, the Kantorei Idar-Oberstein / Obere Nahe, have rehearsed an unusual work for this occasion: Martin Palmeri's "Misa a Buenos Aires".

Buenos Aires, in the poor districts of the Argentinian capital, is the birthplace of the tango. The composer Martin Palmeri, who comes from there, has adopted the Latin text of the Holy Mass, which has been set to music many times and for centuries, into his musical language. The subtitle of the work - "Misatango" - promises that Palmeri is fully committed to this gripping, sensual dance rhythm. He makes the Kyrie (Lord, have mercy!) incredibly urgent, the Gloria almost wild and loud. The work is performed by a ten-piece ensemble of the Mannheim Chamber Philharmonic. Norbert Kotzan, bandoneon, and Thomas Layes, piano, give it a very special sound character.

The special accentuation in the text creates many surprises. For example, the tango also has lyrical characteristics, which appear in beautiful solo parts sung by Theresia Aranowski, soprano, and Achim Jäckel, bass. The poignant "Dona nobis pacem", the plea for peace, which is more important than ever in our crisis-ridden times, is particularly close to the choirmaster's heart. The intensity of the musical message is reinforced by Georgia Rapti's expressive dance. She also makes the concert an experience for the eyes.

In the first part of the evening, other famous tango melodies - some from the world of pop music - will be played, which will complement the main work in an exciting way and show other aspects of tango music. The event will be followed by a cozy get-together in the banquet hall with all the performers and typical local delicacies.

Admission is from 5.30 p.m., tickets are available in advance from www.ticket-regional.de and the associated advance booking offices.
