StattKino shows "Not quite kosher"

As part of the "Film im Theater" season, the StattKino initiative, in cooperation with the Idar-Oberstein Cultural Office, is showing the comedy "Nicht ganz kosher" on Friday, 22 March 2024, at 7.30 pm in the Stadttheater. The film is an atmospheric road movie through the Sinai and an astonishingly humorous plea for understanding between Jews and Arabs. At the same time, the film plays ironically with common stereotypes. The film was awarded the Bavarian Film Prize 2021. At 6.30 pm, Landgasthof Böß will be serving an "Orthodox-Muslim unification meal" in the theater's banquet hall. Registration is required for the meal.

The Jewish community of Alexandria is on the verge of dissolution. Due to the death of a member, it now consists of only nine male believers and can therefore no longer hold services according to the rules of the minyan. A contract with the Egyptian state stipulates that the congregation will be dissolved and all its assets will go to the state if it fails to hold a service on Passover. By chance, Ben, an ultra-Orthodox Jew from the USA, arrives in Israel at this time. The community leader there sends him to Egypt to save the community of Alexandria.

Ben's journey seems to fail; he misses his flight and after a wrong turn on the bus, he ends up in the middle of the Sinai Desert. There he meets Adel, a Palestinian who is looking for his lost camel. The two represent completely different cultures: Ben, an ultra-orthodox American who, for example, uses the scarce water not for drinking but for ritual ablutions, and Adel, an impoverished Bedouin whose life is determined by the Middle East conflict. As they walk together, the two grow closer and it is Adel, not Ben, who ultimately saves the Alexandrian community. The movie ends with the opening of the "No Name Restaurant" in the desert. The name alludes to the Jewish term for God, HaShem.

  • Admission to the movie costs 4 euros. Admission is from 7 pm, there is free seating. The movie including dinner costs 18 euros. Places for the meal are limited, and Landgasthof Böß will accept bookings up to eight days before the event date at the latest, subject to availability, by emailing info@landgasthaus-boess.de. Meal reservations cannot be returned or exchanged. Tickets and food can only be paid for on site at the box office.
