Exploring the library with the tablet

The aim of the day of action is to promote digital participation and is supported by the "Digital for all" initiative. It is backed by a broad alliance of 28 organizations from the fields of civil society, culture, science, business, welfare and the public sector.

At the start of the class tour, the pupils were welcomed to the library in the traditional way with a story about a young pirate and his swearing parrot. In the following library rally "Library Pirates", developed by the Rhineland-Palatinate State Library Center, the children then went on a treasure hunt with tablets. They discovered lots of interesting information about pirates, solved puzzles and completed tricky tasks on the tablet. They also made a pirate fleet out of paper, practiced sailor's knots and recited tongue twisters. The individual teams recorded the results in photos as well as audio and video files. At the end, the class found a pirate treasure together and received small gifts and a certificate in recognition.

Test run was successful

The positive feedback from the children and teachers encouraged the library staff to offer this activity to all elementary school in the coming school year. Teachers can then choose whether the rally should be played in analog or digital form. Another positive aspect of the activity, in addition to getting to know the library, is the link to Medienkomp@ss Rheinland-Pfalz. This concept from the Pädagogisches Landesinstitut is used in primary and secondary schools in the state. With its help, pupils should gradually acquire media skills. It provides a common thread for media education work in schools. During the library rally, the children get to know a basic digital tool with the tablet, they learn how to inform themselves and research, they develop solutions and share the results with others.
