Into the future with children's rights

As part of Children's Rights Week, the Idar-Oberstein Youth Welfare Office is organizing a workshop at JAM on 14 and 15 September 2024 and a World Children's Day Festival at the Idar-Oberstein Exhibition Centre on 20 September 2024. The events are sponsored by the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry for Family Affairs, Women, Culture and Integration and supported by KIWANIS and the Roland Foundation.

This year's World Children's Day on September 20 is being celebrated under the motto "With children's rights into the future". On the 70th anniversary of this day, UNICEF Germany and the German Children's Fund are calling for politicians to focus their priorities more on children. Because every young person is a great opportunity for the future of our society. And it is the right of every child to develop well and to be able to shape their lives - regardless of where they come from or what their residence status is. Investing in children is necessary right now in order to overcome the major challenges of our time. At the same time, it is important to defend children's rights and human rights as a democratic society against all forms of discrimination. In addition, the Week of Children's Rights takes place around World Children's Day in Rhineland-Palatinate. It also has an annually changing motto based on articles from the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Under the motto "Strong children say NO!", the focus in 2024 will be on Article 34: Protection from sexual abuse. This article aims to ensure that children worldwide are protected from sexual abuse and exploitation.

The "Platz da!" workshop aims to create space for children and their rights. It will take place on September 14 and 15 from 1 to 5.30 pm at the Jugendtreff am Markt. In the workshop, children aged 12 and over will be guided by artists Bärbel Busch and Nada Vitz to design modern concrete seating cubes that will later be placed in the city park. For this purpose, designs are made with Eddings and the three basic colors yellow, blue and red in comic style, which are transferred to the cube models. The motifs to be developed include strong children and young people, faces and symbols as well as messages. The models will be presented to a large audience in the foyer of Messe Idar-Oberstein as part of the World Children's Day festival. The participants in the workshop will also deal with the content of their rights. In addition to the municipal youth welfare office, other institutions are also involved.

The World Children's Day Festival kicks off on Friday, September 20, 2024, at 9.30 am with a Trommelfloh concert for schools and daycare centers. The Berlin band led by frontman Maxim Wartenberg rocks and swings, amuses and enthralls. Cheeky and cheerful, sometimes loud and sometimes quiet, the likeable children's music pirate captures the hearts of his little fans with his Trommelfloh band. Tim Schöne, the best and messiest drummer in the world, and Jens "Hyper, Hyper" Niemann on the keys give the Trommelfloh its very own sound. The Trommelflöhe will delight their audience with lively join-in songs about daring "adventurers and pirates", "going swimming" or the ZDF/KIKA hit "Homework Machine". In the afternoon at 4 p.m., the band will give another concert for the whole family. There will also be a colorful supporting program all about children's rights.
