On Saturday, August 24, 2024, at 8 pm, the Chawwerusch Theater will present the open-air play "Don Quixote - An Invitation to Failure" at Oberstein Castle. The play by Danilo Fioriti, freely adapted from Cervantes, is a contribution to the 2024 cultural summer motto "Compass Europe: Stars of the South".
The curtain of the old traveling stage reveals a country nobleman who is not satisfied with reality. Inspired by many chivalric novels, he chooses his neighbor Sancho Panza as his squire and sets out to make the world a better place as the self-proclaimed knight Don Quixote. They see castles in inns, flocks of sheep become armies and mills become giants. They fight their way from one crazy adventure to the next, failing time and again, but never losing heart. Because Don Quixote wants to be a hero: But is it enough to pretend to be a hero in order to be one?
The actors of the traveling stage also have to deal with failure, they stand in for each other, take on new roles and new perspectives and fight for their version of Don Quixote. Does imagination still have the power to change the world? Does theater have this power? And if so, what stories should be shown on the stage that means the world?
On the occasion of its 40th anniversary, the Chawwerusch Theater devotes itself to these questions and takes a closer look at "Don Quixote", this pioneer of utopia. With a large ensemble, in the open air and with music - funny, tragic, heartfelt.
