From Monday, November 6 to Friday, November 24, 2023, the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge will once again be organizing its annual house and street collection. In Idar-Oberstein, the collection will be organized and carried out by the soldiers of the artillery school. The collectors can identify themselves on request.
The Volksbund has existed for over 100 years. It has been a long, often rocky road, from its foundation after the First World War, its appropriation by the National Socialists, then the Second World War, its revival from 1946, first in the West and then after 1989 throughout the Federal Republic of Germany. After Russia's attack on Ukraine, the question of war and peace has moved to the forefront for all of us. The anxious question of how much this war will affect us in Europe remains unanswered even after well over a year.
The Volksbund preserves the graves of more than 2.8 million war dead as a reminder, works with young people at war cemeteries and builds bridges between former enemies. Even 78 years after the end of the Second World War, the Volksbund's task - to create a dignified resting place for every fallen soldier - has not been fulfilled. It is therefore important to continue to support this commitment, which is based on the motto "Reconciliation over the graves - work for peace". The donations from the house and street collection are a contribution to securing this work.
