The photo shows a view of the meeting room. The rows of chairs for the council members are arranged in a semi-circle in ascending order. On the wall behind them is an installation showing the outline of the town of Idar-Oberstein with the coats of arms of the individual districts.

A chapter in itself

As the second event in the city's subscription program, the Altonaer Theater presents the third part of the Kempowski saga on Saturday, 28 October 2023, at 8 pm in the Idar-Oberstein Municipal Theatre. In the play "Ein Kapitel für sich", the family is faced with the ruins left behind by the Second World War in 1945.

After the catastrophe of the Second World War, the Kempowski family experienced misery, hunger, looting and violence first-hand or at the homes of neighbors and friends. But they were not bombed out and still had some money. Between rubble and curfews, the black market and hoarding trains, the family tries to re-establish middle-class continuity after the war.

The photo shows two performers sitting at a table wearing winter jackets and hats.
The third part of the Kempowski saga tells the family story after the Second World War.

After the first-person narrator Walter had "crossed over" to the West for a short time and wanted to demonstrate to the Americans the plundering of the "zone" by the Russians with a few waybills, he was arrested during a visit to Rostock and spent eight years in prison in Bautzen. The charge was espionage. Not only Walter, but also his brother Robert was arrested and eventually even their mother. Walter had admitted her complicity in the interrogation, which he never forgave himself for.

Mother and sons have their very own experiences with imprisonment and prisoners, and so each tells from their own perspective what has happened to them in the world of the imprisoned. And yet, despite all the suffering, Kempowski's laconic humor is evident in all the characters.
