The photo shows a view of the meeting room. The rows of chairs for the council members are arranged in a semi-circle in ascending order. On the wall behind them is an installation showing the outline of the town of Idar-Oberstein with the coats of arms of the individual districts.

The poet with the big nose

As the second performance of the "Film im Theater" season, the StattKino initiative in cooperation with the Idar-Oberstein Cultural Office will be showing the comedy "Curtain up for Cyrano" on Friday, 10 November 2023 at 7.30 pm in the Stadttheater. The Landgasthof Böß will be serving "French cuisine not just for long noses" at 6.30 pm in the theater's banquet hall. Registration is required for this event.

1897 in Paris: the young Edmond Rostand (Thomas Solivérès) is a potential genius as a playwright. However, every one of his plays to date has been a flop. As a result, not only his inspiration suffers, but also the family coffers. But then the tide turns. A famous friend introduces him to the greatest comedian of his time: Constant Coquelin (Olivier Gourmet). To Edmond's surprise, he insists on playing a part in his new play. The problem: the premiere is in three weeks and Edmond hasn't written a word yet. All he knows so far is the title: "Cyrano de Bergerac".

In Paris in 1897, a poet develops a play to escape impending ruin. Sounds serious and bland? But it is not at all. On the contrary, "Curtain Up for Cyrano" is a fast-paced, entertaining comedy with great wit. The moviegoer joins in the excitement as the fictional origin story is mirrored in the play "Cyrano de Bergerac". The story is also timeless, as the work of a screenwriter today is hardly any different from the challenges that Edmond Rostand had to overcome. "Curtain Up for Cyrano" tells the fictional story of the genesis of the real play "Cyrano de Bergerac" by the Marseille writer Edmond Rostand (1868-1918), which was performed for the first time at the Théâtre de la Porte Saint-Martin in Paris at the end of 1897. Incidentally, the aforementioned Cyrano de Bergerac (1619-1655) really did exist. The story about the poet with the big nose who, together with an attractive simpleton, vies for the favor of his beloved Roxane, is one of the classics of world literature
