In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare created what is probably the most famous lovers in world literature. In Paul Stebbings' production, the ancient but always contemporary story is liberated from the clichés of West Side Story and the film with Leonardo DiCaprio. Stebbings brings the city of Verona to the stage in all its splendor, passion and decadence. It is an Italy in which honor, pride and family loyalty are valued more highly than morality, peace and love. In a world torn apart by violence and intolerance in equal measure and where peace seems as elusive as true love, this great tragedy is as relevant as ever.
All too often, Shakespeare productions suffer from directors and set designers imposing an interpretation on the original that suppresses its essence. ADG, however, works diligently to bring out the true richness and depth of the plays. This approach is much appreciated by audiences. They are often surprised at how accessible and relevant Shakespeare's works are when performed in this way. The music for this production consists of both recorded instrumental and live vocal elements. In addition to the original composition, John Kenny has arranged and adapted many baroque vocal and instrumental works, which will be performed by the Scott Free Ensemble on period instruments (baroque violin, alto and tenor sackbuts, percussion, harpsichord and organ).
