In November 2018, the rock church regularly closed its doors after the tourist season. After that, rock stabilization work began on the church rock, which was initially scheduled to last until March 2019. During the course of the work, however, it was discovered that the rock around the church was more dilapidated than initially assumed. As a result, the work became increasingly extensive and complex and ultimately lasted until the summer of last year. The façade of the building was then painted and in September 2022, the Trinitatis parish of Oberstein celebrated the reopening of the Felsenkirche. However, this was more of a symbolic act, as it was not possible for visitors to view it.
Even for the new tourist season, the parish is unable to guarantee the earlier general opening of the church, which is also a special sight in the town of Idar-Oberstein. The EdelSteinLand tourist information office is therefore offering guided tours of the rock church. In addition to special guided tours for guests, there are also public tours for which anyone interested can register. And demand is high, the first date was booked up immediately.
