Summer is (pre-)reading time

This year, 220 municipal and church libraries are taking part in the state-wide reading promotion campaign, including the Idar-Oberstein City Library once again. The summer of reading and the summer of reading aloud will last until September 10, 2023. On Friday, September 22, the city library will host a closing party with the presentation of certificates and a large raffle.

Register, read and win prizes

The Summer of Reading is aimed at children and young people aged six to 16. Anyone who registers can borrow and read current books for children and young people exclusively and free of charge. Participants give their assessment of the books they have read either as an interview, online in the form of an "online book tip" or via an analog book check. For each book read, there is a stamp on the club card and a rating card. Each of the completed rating cards is entered into the nationwide prize draw. The more you read, the higher your chances of winning. The main prize is a voucher for a two-day stay for four people at Europapark Rust with the Rulantica water world. Anyone who reads at least three books during the summer vacation will receive a certificate. Many schools also make a positive note of successful participation on a supplement to the next school report.

The first step to reading - have someone read to you!

The summer of reading aloud is aimed at daycare children of reading age as well as potential readers. To take part in the event, you have to register at the library. For every book read to the child, a stamp is placed on the club card. Three stamps collected and a picture drawn of their favorite book qualify the children to receive a certificate. One club card per child goes into the lottery pot for the nationwide competition. The main prize is a children's bicycle, and a Lego set, Tonie box or Tonie figures, games and book vouchers will also be raffled off.

Lesesommer and Vorlese-Sommer are part of the state-wide reading promotion campaign "Lesespaß aus der Bücherei", which is coordinated by the State Library Center. This year, Trier City Library is hosting the opening event. The opening ceremony was held this morning by Minister President Malu Dreyer.

  • Further information on the reading promotion can be found at www.lesesommer.de or at the Idar-Oberstein City Library in Hauptstraße 373a. It is open on Mondays and Thursdays from 10 am to 2 pm and 3 pm to 6 pm and on Wednesdays and Fridays from 12 pm to 5 pm.
