Reading competition takes place in presence again

On Friday, February 10, 2023, at 2.30 p.m., the regional final of this year's reading competition will take place in the Idar-Oberstein City Library. The event is organized by the Idar-Oberstein Youth Welfare Office and the Schulz-Ebrecht bookshop. In the regional round of the 64th German Book Trade Reading Competition, the winners of the school competitions will compete in the town library to find the best reader in the Birkenfeld district.

With around 600,000 participants every year, the reading competition, which was launched in 1959, is the oldest and largest school competition in Germany. The competition aims to spread enthusiasm for books to the public, strengthen children's reading skills and thus help them to broaden their horizons, understand social changes and develop an openness to new things. The Foundation for Book Culture and Reading Promotion also publishes curated reading tips on numerous topics at www.vorlesewettbewerb.de/der-wettbewerb/buchempfehlungen - even beyond the well-known children's book classics.

Around 6,600 schoolchildren in the 6th grade nationwide are taking part in the more than 600 regional decisions in cities and districts, which are organized by bookshops, libraries, schools and other cultural institutions. All participating children receive a certificate and the book "Agnes and the Dream Key" by Tuutikki Tolonen. The winners of the district competitions are allowed to travel to the subsequent regional competition. The stages lead from the school decisions via city/district, district and state level to the national final with the 16 state winners on June 21, 2023 in Berlin at rbb.

The reading competition is organized by the Stiftung Buchkultur und Leseförderung des Börsenvereins des Deutschen Buchhandels and is under the patronage of the Federal President. The Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth sponsors the reading competition. The Education and Social Foundation of the Sparda-Bank Baden-Württemberg, the Sparda-Bank Hessen, the Gewinn-Sparverein der Sparda-Bank München e. V. and the Sparda Bank Hamburg support the decisions at regional level. The media partner is rbb.
