Closure of the B422 / Tiefensteiner Straße

Update 21.02.2025 - Traffic detour

The construction work and the necessary detour will begin one day earlier, on Tuesday, March 4, 2025. In order to carry out the work, the B 422, Tiefensteiner Straße must be completely closed to through traffic and a large-scale detour route will be designated. During the work, the Weiherschleife parking lot will remain accessible from the direction of Idar, and in the first construction phase it will be possible to drive from the direction of Kirschweiler as far as the Barth & Frey car dealership. The Weiherschleife motorhome parking lot cannot be used during the first construction phase.

Detour via Veitsrodt and Vollmersbach

All through traffic (cars, lorries and public transport) from Idar and Oberstein, which normally travels via the B 422 through the Tiefenstein district, will be diverted from the main road to Vollmersbachstraße at the traffic circle at the OIE building and routed along the L 177 through Vollmersbach and Veitsrodt. From the traffic circle between Veitsrodt and Herborn, the route continues on the L 175 and Herrsteiner Straße to the traffic lights at Wagners Eck in Tiefenstein. The detour route ends there. Traffic coming from Hettenrodt and Kirschweiler in the direction of Idar and Oberstein will use the same route in the opposite direction.

Detour during the Veitsrodt premium market

During the Veitsrodt premium market from July 11 to 14, 2025, the L 177 between Veitsrodt and Herborn will be closed. The detour route will therefore be relocated during this time. It will then lead from Idar and Oberstein via Saarstraße through Algenrodt to the B 41 from there to Rötsweiler-Nockenthal on Hochwaldstraße to Siesbach, via the L 175 to Hettenrodt. In the opposite direction, traffic will be diverted to the main road in Kirschweiler before it reaches the Kirschweilerbrücke bridge and will be routed to Hettenrodt. Before reaching Hettenrodt, traffic will take the detour described above in the opposite direction.

Bus transport

Several bus routes are also affected by the detour, namely the 800 (Hochwald-Schnellbus) Idar-Oberstein to Trier, 804 Idar-Oberstein Bahnhof to Tiefenstein, 840 Idar-Oberstein to Wittlich, 845 Idar-Oberstein to Morbach as well as school trips on routes 845, 847 and 850S.

Information on the changed routes and departure times can be found on the Internet

As some of the bus routes will pass through Bachweg in the Tiefenstein district during the detour, a stopping ban will be introduced at the junctions with Herrsteiner Straße and Tiefensteiner Straße in both directions.

At the Idar market square, the current parking signs at the bus bay in front of the former market school building will be removed. For the duration of the detour, the area will be used as a waiting area for buses on routes 840 and 845.

Subject to weather conditions, the extension work on Tiefensteiner Straße between Weiherschleife and the Grimm retirement home will begin on Wednesday, March 5, 2025. The road and sidewalks will be extended over a length of around 440 meters and the street lighting and supply systems for water, sewer, gas, electricity and telecommunications will be renewed or renovated.

The expansion section is divided into three sections. The first section, which is around 190 meters long, runs from the Weiherschleife to just before house number 145. In this section, Landesbetrieb Mobilität is also renovating the bridge structure at the level of the "Weiherschlösschen". The Weiherschleife parking lot can still be accessed. The second construction section, which is around 125 meters long, runs from house number 145 to the junction between the Barth & Frey car dealership and house number 157. The third section, which is also around 125 meters long, then runs from there to the Grimm retirement home at Tiefensteiner Straße 171.

General plan

The respective construction section will be fully closed to through traffic. The first and second sections will be expanded in 2025. The full closure will be lifted during the winter of 2025/2026. The expansion of the third section will then take place from spring 2026 with a full closure again. Due to the closure of the B422, a large-scale detour of road traffic, including public transport, is necessary. The final planning of the extensive detour signs is currently underway. Further information will be provided shortly.
