MARRIAGE IN IDAR-OBERSTEIN

REGISTRATION FOR MARRIAGE

Formal registration is required for the marriage. It is accepted by a registry office in whose district one of the engaged couple resides. If you both do not live in Idar-Oberstein and would still like to get married in Idar-Oberstein, register your marriage at your local registry office and inform them that you would like to get married in Idar-Oberstein. The registry office at your place of residence will then authorize the Idar-Oberstein registry office to perform the marriage.
When you register your marriage, the registry office will check your marital status and whether there are any obstacles to your wish to marry. Certain documents must be submitted for this purpose (see documents for marriage registration). The marriage registration is valid for 6 months, i.e. you can only get married within 6 months of registering. Please register early for "special marriage dates" - however, it is always possible to arrange a date at short notice.
We can reserve your desired date without obligation before you register for the marriage. However, you will only receive a binding confirmation of the date once the registration for the marriage has been received and checked.

WEDDINGS IN THE CITY ADMINISTRATION BUILDING

On Fridays not listed in the "Wedding dates in our special wedding halls" section, weddings take place in the wedding hall at Georg-Maus-Straße 2.
We can also reserve your desired date without obligation before you register your marriage. However, you will only receive a binding confirmation of the date once the marriage registration has been received and checked.

  • Naming in marriage

The spouses should choose a common married name at the time of marriage. The determination of a married name does not have to take place at the time of the marriage. It can be omitted or declared later by both spouses without notice, but is irrevocable. The husband's or wife's maiden name or the surname used by one of the spouses may be chosen as the married name. One of the spouses may have a double name. Children born during the marriage also receive the name jointly chosen by the spouses.

If you do not wish to have a joint married name, each of the spouses will keep the name they had at the time of the marriage.

German naming law does not permit the determination of a double name for both spouses.
