Idar-Oberstein town archive
INVENTORIES AND TASKS
The Idar-Oberstein town archive is the central point of contact for anyone interested in the history of the town, its districts and the surrounding area. The main focus of the holdings is on documents from the Idar-Oberstein town council and company archives from local businesses, particularly from the jewelry and gemstone industry. In addition, documents and collections from associations and private individuals are also acquired. Further insight into the past is provided by our extensive newspaper and photo collections as well as the local history library.
We see ourselves as a point of contact in the field of historical education in Idar-Oberstein and the surrounding area. In addition to our own publications and exhibitions on the history of the town, we cooperate with other institutions within and outside the town administration and support schools, among other things, in the reappraisal of our local history.
Our task is to take over, record, preserve, make accessible and communicate documents and information on the history of the town of Idar-Oberstein. The aims of our work are to make administrative actions more transparent and to document the past and present of the town in all its facets. The legal basis for our work is the State Archives Act and the statutes of the town archive.
It is possible to view the archive and library holdings on site during our opening hours and by appointment. We will of course be happy to help you with your historical or genealogical research. For family history research, we have civil registers from 1800 onwards, address and telephone directories, estates, church register transcripts and genealogical literature.
We look forward to your inquiries and will be happy to advise you!
