Since 1983, the city of Idar-Oberstein has been calling for a façade competition at regular intervals under the motto "Colorful Idar-Oberstein". Property owners in Idar-Oberstein have the opportunity to enter the façades of buildings that have been stylishly renovated or colorfully redesigned during the competition period into the competition and present the improvements made to their façades. Ideally, the ideas will inspire other building owners and encourage them to take action themselves.
Incentive for homeowners The aim is to offer homeowners in the city a small incentive to contribute to a visually appealing living environment by modernizing the façade. An attractive cityscape is in the interests of both the citizens and the council and administration.
Review of the 2021/2022 facade competition
22 applications were submitted for the 2021/2022 façade competition that met the requirements. The winning buildings are listed below.
1st prize facade competition 2021/2022
Building: Algenrodter Straße 24, Algenrodt district Owner: Tanja and Hans-Peter Becker Execution: Stuckgeschäft Leyser, Idar-Oberstein Explanation: The jury was unanimous in its opinion that only 1st prize could be awarded for this design achievement. The Becker couple have achieved a very good façade design in Algenrodter Strasse. It was certainly not easy to turn the building, which was built in 1860 and has undergone many structural changes over the years, back into a jewel that enriches Algenrodter Strasse. On the one hand, they have succeeded in giving the façade a new appearance by skilfully structuring the historic façade horizontally and using profiles and ornaments to contrast and highlight the entrance door and windows. The façade was provided with fabric and new topcoat plaster and painted, the window surrounds were then set off in color and the horizontal windows were set off. The color scheme was kept emphatically simple in a shade of grey slightly tending towards beige, from which the blue-grey base and the white window surrounds clearly stand out, which in turn structures the façade well, creating an excellent overall effect of the building, which certainly justifies the 1st prize.
2nd prize facade competition 2021/2022
Building: Hauptstraße 398/400, Oberstein district Owner: Caratum Execution: Malerbetrieb Pfeiffer, Idar-Oberstein Reason: The 2nd prize in the façade competition goes to Hauptstraße for the façade design of the residential and commercial building on Christuskirchplatz owned by Caratum by Mr. Haferkorn.
The building from 1968/70 was constructed in reinforced concrete and masonry and looked very dull before the renovation. The new, freshly colored façade design impressed the jury members. After a thorough façade cleaning, the existing clinker surfaces were coated and replastered. In addition, the exposed concrete reinforcement was extensively renovated. By contrasting the color of the stairwell areas and the balconies in a dark blue tone, a beautiful design structure of the façade was achieved, which corresponds very well with the gray and white tones of the façade. In addition, all the sheet metal cladding and the canopy were repainted. It is great that a residential and commercial building in the city center has been enhanced in this way and enriches the cityscape with a fresh façade design.
3rd prize facade competition 2021/2022
Building: Sonnenstraße 4, Göttschied district Owner: Sebastian Fritsch
Execution: Painting company Pfeiffer, Idar-Oberstein Reason: The Fritsch family home in Sonnenstraße rises above a beautiful front garden design, which has been given a tasteful new look with a new and very modern façade design. The façade of the house, which was built in 1971, was cleaned and plastered using a new pressed concrete technique and then painted. The façade has the appearance of an exposed concrete surface. The terrace and garage areas in front of the house were clad with slate bricks. The railings were made of wood with a stainless steel handrail, which creates a very nice contrast to the slate and concrete surface. The overall impression was so harmonious that the jury members were able to agree on the 3rd prize for this design.
4th prize facade competition 2021/2022
Building: Weierbacher Straße 42, Weierbach district
Owner: Danou Rakotoson Execution: Painting company Patrick Skulec, Idar-Oberstein Reason: The majority of the jury was impressed by the fresh color scheme of the building with its horizontally contrasting bands. This façade design gives it a more modern look. The building was newly reinforced and plastered and painted white. The façade was restructured with wide block bands in light grey. The façade rests on a light grey base, the color gradation of which matches the shade of the façade well. This color scheme has made an older building look so beautiful again that it now shines in a modern light. And, as you can see from the photos, it also goes perfectly with the blue summer sky.
5th prize facade competition 2021/2022
Building: Am Rumpelteich 4, Oberstein district Owner: Petra and Wolfgang Fickus
Execution: Malerbetrieb Pfeiffer, Idar-Oberstein Justification: The Am Rumpelteich residential building is an architecturally interesting modern building that has been greatly enhanced by a new color and shape design that runs across the entire façade. After cleaning and repairing the cracks in the plaster surfaces, the residential building was recoated in a beige base color. The entrance area was colored with contrasting bands in light beige and white tones to emphasize the verticals. The base was designed in a dark beige tone that matches the front door and garage door. All in all, the building has gained a lot from the new color design, which is why the 5th prize was awarded here.
Justification: The residential building is a very well-preserved architectural object in Idar. It was built in 1909 and the façade was redesigned in different shades of gray. The façade is structured in the formal language of the beginning of the last century with horizontal bands and relief-forming stucco elements around the windows up to the gable end. This creates a very harmonious overall impression of the historic residential building, which blends in very well with the cityscape. After cleaning the façades, extensive restoration work was carried out on the partial surfaces and ornamentation of the building at Goethestrasse 20 during the redesign. An elastic paint system was then applied to the façade, the ornamentation and the plinth. All relief-forming elements, such as window jambs, cornices and window sills, were painted in a white shade. Some of these decorative elements in the area below the windows and in the horizontal bands were then set off again in a golden hue.
Recognition of the 2021/2022 facade competition
Building: Im Nachen 12, Weierbach district Owner: Erhard Härter family
Execution: Painting company Pfeiffer, Idar-Oberstein Reason: The jury liked the newly renovated residential building from 1903 in the Weierbach district at first glance. After thorough cleaning, the façade was reinforced, replastered and textured by the contractor. The existing sandstone walls in the window and plinth area were cleaned, smoothed and impregnated. The façade was painted in a rust-red color. The bay window, the roof cornice, the wooden beams and the shutters were set off against the new façade in white. We would like to thank the Erhard Härter family and the company that carried out the work for this successful example of façade renovation.
Recognition of the 2021/2022 facade competition
Building: Hauptstraße 386, Oberstein district Owner: Caratum Execution: Malerbetrieb Pfeiffer, Idar-Oberstein Justification: The award goes to a very elaborately renovated residential and commercial building in the Oberstein pedestrian zone (town villa). It is a historic house from the turn of the century. Elaborate decorations structure the Art Nouveau façade and bring the projecting bay windows and balconies even more into focus.
The existing façade plaster was removed and the stucco façade refurbished and restored. The façade was then replastered and painted in a yellow ochre tone. The historic Art Nouveau elements were set off in white. The first floor was contrasted with a light shade of gray. The metal railings of the balconies were also recoated in light grey to match the façade and set off against it. We would like to thank Caratum and the contractor for this special project.
